A freshman World Studies class has donated $376 to MADRE (www.madre.org) and $304 to Tostan (www.tostan.org), both organizations that support women in the developing world. Students in Mr. Chipman's 6th period class read the book 'Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide' by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, then presented on the issues addressed in the book and chose an organization for women to support and raise awareness. Of the fourteen organizations, the class voted on MADRE and Tostan as the organizations the class would actually raise money for at Lane. In just one week of raising money for each organization, students were able to collect $680 in donatations. For more information about issues of gender inequality around the world, we recommend you read Half the Sky!
